NOTIFICATION OF WORK FORMER BERK OIL AND PACIFIC METAL CRAFT SITE 5600-5636 SHULL STREET, BELL GARDENS, CALIFORNIA 90201

Under the direction and oversight of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board – Los Angeles  Region (Regional Board), environmental contractors will be removing contaminated soil, excavating approximately 8,100 cubic yards of impacted soil, properly transporting and disposing of materials and  importing backfill material, as needed, for the subject site at 5600-5636 Shull Street, Bell Gardens,  California (Site). Environmental contractors will also be implementing a soil vapor extraction (SVE)  pilot test pursuant to Regional Board approved plans.  


WHEN: Late-September 2024 through late-December 2024 WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 


WHERE: Former Berk Oil and Pacific Metal Site, 5600-5636 Shull Street, Bell Gardens, California 90201



WHAT: 

1. Shallow debris, inactive subsurface utility lines, historical groundwater monitoring wells, surface  soils, building foundations, and asphalt/pavement surfaces will be removed to expose subsurface  soils. 

2. Soils impacted with hydrocarbons and lead will be excavated.  

3. Excavated soil will be transported and appropriately disposed of off-Site. Additionally, clean  imported backfill materials will be used to fill necessary areas to achieve level grading. 

4. A SVE system for pilot testing will be installed. 


PARKING RESTRICTIONS: 

No contractor vehicles will park on the street. All contractor vehicles will be kept on-site to prevent  impacts on the surrounding residential neighborhood. 


SITE BACKGROUND: 

The Former Berk Oil and Pacific Metal Craft Site is a 4.3-acre vacant lot currently owned by the Bell  Gardens Successor Agency to the former Community Development Commission. The Site has been  undeveloped for approximately 30 years. Historical industrial operations included asphalt mixing, oil  distribution, and fabrication of metal and plastic components. Diesel, waste oil, degreasers, and asphalt  were also stored at the Site in above-ground storage tanks and under-ground storage tanks.
